Need help with funding?

How can I build a playground in my community?

Steps to take

  • Step 1: Build Community Support

  • Step 2: Define the Budget

  • Step 3: Select the Site

  • Step 4: Design for Safety, Inclusion & Sustainability

  • Step 5: Create a Realistic Timeline

  • Step 6: Fundraise & Find Grants

  • Step 7: Build With Pros

  • Start with a Free Site Assessment

Step 1: Build Community Support

Start by gathering a small team of champions—parents, PTO members, HOA leaders, church staff, local business owners, and parks advocates.
What to do:

  • Host a short kickoff meeting and define the vision (age groups served, purpose, location ideas).

  • Assign roles: fundraising, outreach, permitting research, vendor coordination.

  • Capture early needs (e.g., inclusive play, shade, fencing, surfacing) and who benefits (students, church families, nearby neighborhoods).

Pro tip: Ask supporters for letters of support; they help with grants and donations.

Step 2: Define the Budget

Your budget is shaped by the number of children, equipment mix, site work, and safety surfacing.
Budget line items to consider:

  • Equipment packages and custom features (climbers, slides, swings)

  • Professional installation & certified safety surfacing

  • Site preparation (demo, grading, drainage, edging)

  • Shade, benches, bike racks, trash/recycling receptacles

  • Accessibility (ramps, transfer stations, accessible routes/parking)

  • Permits/inspections and contingency

Stretch the budget: Start with a core design and plan add-ons (or phases) as funding grows.

Step 3: Select the Site

Look for a dry, visible, easily accessible location with nearby parking and restrooms (or room for future amenities).
Checklist:

  • Ownership & permissions (public park, school, church, HOA, or private donor)

  • Sun, wind, and drainage patterns

  • Soil conditions and any utilities underground

  • Clear accessible routes from parking to play area

  • Neighbor considerations (noise, lighting, hours)

Step 4: Design for Safety, Inclusion & Sustainability

A safe, inclusive, and eco-conscious design is good for kids and good for the community.

Safety & accessibility

  • Plan age-appropriate equipment and proper use zones.

  • Include ADA-compliant routes and inclusive play elements so children of all abilities can participate (see ADA guidelines).  https://www.ada.gov/" rel="noopener" target="_blank">The Americans with Disabilities Act | ADA.gov

Environmental sustainability

  • Favor durable materials and recycled content where possible (e.g., recycled rubber surfacing, HDPE, or steel with long life cycles).

  • Add shade (canopy or trees), drought-tolerant landscaping, and smart drainage to reduce heat and runoff.

Experience & aesthetics

  • Mix high-energy and social/quiet play zones.

  • Consider theme, color palette, and wayfinding that matches your school, church, or municipal brand.

Blue Extruo advantage: We design around safety standards, inclusive play, and sustainable choices—then install with trained crews so your playground performs for years.

Step 5: Create a Realistic Timeline

Timelines depend on your scope, approvals, fundraising pace, and weather.
Typical phases:

  1. Concept & pricing → 2) Funding & approvals → 3) Final design & order → 4) Site work & installation → 5) Safety inspection & opening

Build in buffer for permits, materials lead times, and community events (groundbreaking, ribbon-cutting).

Step 6: Fundraise & Find Grants

Combine private donations, local business sponsorships, events (fun runs, auctions, galas), and grants from foundations, civic groups, and park programs.
Make it easy to give:

  • Launch a simple donation page (QR codes at events help).

  • Offer naming opportunities (benches, shade structures, sponsor boards).

  • Post regular progress updates on Facebook/Instagram; tag partners and the city.

Step 7: Build With Pros

Community volunteer days can be a great add-on, but professional installation ensures your equipment and surfacing are installed correctly and safely.
What Blue Extruo handles:

  • Pre-construction meeting and site logistics

  • Certified installation of equipment and safety surfacing

  • Final checks and walkthroughs, plus care & maintenance guidance
